Safety of Navigation
Aids to Navigation
Lighthouses are the most important aids to navigation which enable a safe day and night navigation through determined sea regions.
They are built at the most prominent or distant points of the Croatian territorial sea.
They consist in stone buildings with prominent light towers.
They usually have main and stand-by light. The range of the main light is 30 NM. Some lighthouses are equipped with racons and/or fog detectors and fog sirens.
All lighthouses are automated and supervised by means of remote control system.
However, because of the importance of lighthouses for safety of navigation and in order to protect lighthouse buildings from degradation, 17 lighthouses still have personnel (1 or 2 lightkeepers in a shift).
