In accordance with the Maritime regulations (Official Gazette No. 181/04) and the Law about Plovput (Offiiicial Gazette No. 73/97) coast radio stations of Plovput carry out the activities of maritime radio service which serves for the protection of lives and safety of navigation in the region A1 of the Adriatic Sea. (SOLAS and GMDSS).
Making part of Maritime Regions of Rijeka, Split and Dubrovnik there are three coast radio stations bearing the same name: Rijeka Radio, Split Radio and Dubrovnik Radio which apart from an organized radio service carry out the following activities:
- Constant watch on emergency and safety of navigation frequencies (VHF CH 16 in all the stations and VHF DSC CH 70 in the coast radio station Split Radio, with the scope of protection of human lives at sea and in accordance with the international Radio Service Regulations.
- Mediation in cases of emergency and safety communications which are coordinated by the National search and rescue center (MRCC) in Rijeka, in accordance with the national Planning for search and rescue at sea
- Mediation in communications regarding request for medical assistance
- Transmission of maritime and safety information (MSI) via VHFsystem from all coast radio stations and via NAVTEX from coast radio station Split Radio
- Mediation in communications between ships and the National Search and Rescue Center (MRCC) in Rijeka, making part of a standby Ship position reporting system in the Adriatic Sea (via VHF system in coast radio stations Split Radio and Dubrovnik Radio), related to the problems of sea pollution
Apart from the above mentioned activities which refer to emergency and safety of navigation, coast radio stations offer also commercial radiocommunication services via VHF system.
Transmission of maritime and safety information (MSI)
- Weather reports which are transmitted 3 times a day in Croatian and English languages via VHF system from 3 coast radio stations. Coast radio stations get weather reports from the Maritime Meteorological Center (PMC) in Croatian language.
- Navigational warnings are transmitted 3 times a day at the same time, in Croatian and English language, after the transmission of weather reports, via VHF system from all coast radio stations. The Croatian Hydrographic Institute (HHI) gives navigational warnings to the coast radio station Split Radio, which distributes them to all other coast radio stations.
- NAVTEX messages are transmitted 6 times a day in English in the coast radio station Split Radio. After processing Split Radio transmits the messages of international importance to Cadiz (Spain), where the center for NAVAREA III region is located. HHI has the role of coordinater for NAVTEX system in Croatia.
- Special maritime-safety information (MSI) are transmitted via VHF system from all radio stations and via NAVTEX in the coast radio station Split Radio. MRCC or competent Harbour Master’s offices sends the request for their transmission , in accordance with their priority in relation to emergency and safety.
Centre for reporting of alarms originating from aids to navigation of 1st category which are important for safety of navigation
Within the coast radio station Split Radio there is also a Centre for reporting of alarms making part of the Remote Control System of aids to navigation. Its aim is to obtain in due time information about the states of alarm of the equipment on aids to navigation (light extinction or unauthorized entering into the space with lighting equipment). Depending on type of alarm, actions on failure removal are carried out. In the Maintenance Department of Plovput (Baza-Stinice) there is a Control Centre where data coming from the most important aids of navigation are collected and processed and preventive measure on assuring reliable functioning of lighting equipment are undertaken.The equipment located on aids to navigation is included into the Remote control system. By means of a programmable logic controller (PLC) operating parameters and alarms are sent to the computers located in centres.
